Wedding Food Planned Perfectly

Further, many of the bride’s family had special dietary/religious needs that had to be met with the food. No alcohol, garlic, onions, seafood, or meat could be used in the dishes to accommodate the bride’s side of the family. How was this challenge approached?

“In wanting to make their wedding as elegant as the couple desired and incorporate their unique colors and fun personality, I looked for foods that were blue and orange and found ways to include them in the menu.” (Noelle, executive chef). For example, for the appetizers, we had little shot glasses of fruit salad that had mandarin oranges and blueberries in it. The signature drink was a Clementine orange spritzer and a blueberry one, both non-alcoholic and a great compliment to the meal. For the non-vegetarians there were staples like chicken saltimbocca (prosciutto wrapped chicken stuffed with provolone cheese), and shrimp scampi, and for the vegetarians assorted soups and salads and homemade butternut squash raviolis. These incorporated the colors and the elegance of the wedding, while balancing well with the whole menu.

Overall, your friends and family come to your wedding to share your special day with you, but a large highlight for them is the food and beverages provided. Offbeat Brides: Non-Traditional Wedding Rings

Many couples actually procrastinate getting engaged, even if they have been together for years. One reason: the cost of the engagement ring. A traditional wedding ring can cost thousands of dollars and a lot of emotional stress.

Trends We Love: Modern Coed Baby Showers

Many expecting couples are ditching the old fashioned idea that a baby shower is only for the girls. Sure, most of the games and "cutesy" things at the showers cater to the ladies, but who says they have to? After all, the guy definaetly had a part in the making of the baby!

Many of our friend and family have been pregnant lately and we have been attending their coed baby showers. Less games with more food and drinks to keep the party going are the trend. (Yes, please retire the "smell the dirty diaper and guess what chocolate bar it is" game. So over it.) Of course there is still the traditional opening of gifts. Who can resist all those minature clothes?

When planning your coed baby shower, it is important to design a party that will make both women and men want to come. Don't think that you are trapped with the traditional light blue or light ink colors. Bold, bright colors add punch and shout fun.

The Wedding Gift Etiquette

Most people would turn a blind eye on wedding gift etiquette although we have the need to consider this issue.

Above anything, it’s wrong to ask for gift. You don’t send a card to your guest telling them “hey, we need a brand new car!” It is even wrong to mention about a gift registry. Again, it is very incorrect in a wedding etiquette for a couple to ask for a particular kind of gift or to even give a hint about the gift they want to get.

For the guests, we all know the famous rule that we have the whole year to send our wedding gift to the couple. However, gifts must be given not later than 3 months after the big event and to allow the couple to even wait for this long is considered rude. People should send their gift as soon as the invitations are sent out or they should at least bring one during the big day. If you would like to send the gift before the event, this way, you are freed from worrying about carrying something bulky during the wedding.

Another thing to consider is how much you are going to spend for a gift. There is a funny rumor going around that the cost of the gift must equal the cost of the meal prepared on the reception. This is hilariously wrong. A person can give anything she wants to, regardless of the price of the dinner.

Is it fine to give money? Of course it is, in case it is your preference. What’s wrong is to ask for a gift of money. A couple asking for this is committing something against the proper wedding gift etiquette.

And although none would like to think about a cancelled wedding, this saddening event would sometimes happen. In view of this, wedding gifts must not be used before the wedding and in case the wedding is cancelled, all gifts should be returned to the givers.

Now that you are aware of some wedding etiquette, it’s sensible to practice them all next time you attend a wedding or if you’ll have your own wedding in the future.

Amanda's wedding day was fast approaching. Nothing could dampen her excitement - not even her parent's nasty divorce.

Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear and would be the best dressed mother-of-the-bride ever! A week later, Amanda was horrified to learn that her father's new young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother!

Amanda asked her father's new young wife to exchange it, but she refused." Absolutely not. I look like a million bucks in this dress and I'm wearing it," she replied.

Amanda told her mother who graciously said, "Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress. After all, it's your special day."

A few days later, they went shopping and did find another gorgeous dress. When they stopped for lunch, Amanda asked her mother, "Aren't you going to return the other dress? You really don't have another occasion to where you can where it."

Her mother just smiled and replied, "Of course I do, dear. I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding!"

Fun With Gift Wrapping: Coming up Rosey!

It's that time of year when we all start our holiday shopping and gift giving routines. It's also the season for engagements, and as many of our friends are proving, babies.

With tight budgets, many of us are scaling back on lavish, expensive gifts. Yet, that doesn;t mean you can't give a gift with the wow factor. One way to achieve this: creative gift wrapping.

For my sister-in-law's recent birthday, we took the stainless steel utensils and water pitcher and turned it into a spring bouqet. We cut out daisy style flower petal rounds and glued them around the utensils. We then arranged the utensils in the water pitcher and wrapped a pretty bow around it. It was a group gift that had a lot of compliments at the party.

A friend of ours also had the same idea for a kids party. They gave the kids flower pot, seed and soil, and made paper flowers around lolipops. The kids then had a treat of the suckers and also got to plant flowers of their own and watch them grow.

So instead of spending a ton of money that you don't have, spend some time on how your present the gift. And don't forget to take the time to stop and smell the roses.

How to Pick a Wedding Day Color

Wedding colors are one of the biggest decisions a bride has to make when planning her wedding. Since the colors will be used in your bridal veil, decorations, flowers, clothes, invitations and table linens, among other things, it is important that the color both be one that looks good and is compatible with the season. Here are some ideas on how to pick a wedding day color.

1. Decide whether or not you want to have a wedding theme. If your theme is one that limits your color choices, you automatically have a range of colors you need to work within.

2. Consider the season you are having your wedding in. Autumn and winter weddings look best in warm colors like reds and oranges while spring and summer colors can be pastels or greens and purples.

3. Find out the color of your birth stone or your mother’s, if that color works for you, it might add another layer of meaning to your wedding day.

4. Go to your local nursery to get inspiration from the flowers that are in season. Since flowers play a large part in decorations you can choose a color based on the flowers you can easily get.

5. Keep your venue in mind when looking at colors. The drapes, seating and walls all need to go well with the color you end up picking.

6. Make a list of all the colors you and your groom like, and the ones you absolutely don’t want in your wedding. This will help you come up with a shortlist of colors to consider.

7. Look at color ribbon samples to find colors that both look good on you (as an accent color on your dress or veil) as well as suit the theme for your wedding.

8. Talk to your cake designer, florist, wedding designer and wedding invitation printer about the colors that can be incorporated into all three things.

9. Go looking for bridesmaid dresses. Since you need to choose a color that looks good on all your bridesmaids, it will be helpful in narrowing down your list of potential colors

10. Look at having two main colors and an accent color that is complementary to these. Complementary colors are the ones that are opposite to each other on the color wheel.

11. Once you have your colors, get them incorporated wherever possible. Make a color wedding veil with your main color, while the other accessories, favors, invitations, linens and flowers can match to the accent color.

Tips

Limit the number of colors you use to two or three.

Talk to your wedding planner, if you have one, about colors they recommend. Sometimes they can mention colors you might not have considered before.

Talk to your veil and accessory designer to incorporate colors into the edging of your veil, your tiara and your jewelry sets with color ribbon, crystals or pearl accents.

Look at as many color samples as possible before making your first shortlist. Sometimes colors you may not see in your everyday life can look great in wedding decorations.

Have a sewing box? Well take out those pincushions and put it to good use! Pincushions are usually creative shapes and styles, like this tomato-pepper ring pillow, and can be finished off with a simple piece of ribbon to hold your rings in place.

An outdoor reception can be completed with this moss ring pillow. To make: Glue green ribbon around an ice cream-pint top. Glue green felt to bottom. Arrange spike moss in top. Anchor ribbon to moss with floral wire. Slip rings through ribbon; tie a bow.

This silk flower ring pillow is a striking keepsake. Fill the pillow with potpourri and have a scented sachet to keep in your drawers after the wedding is over. Every time you open that drawer the scent with bring back fond memories of the day.

Kids on the Big Day

Children attending the wedding is a topic subjected to great debate. For some, wedding is a time when the whole family can be together while others think that children can be too immature for such occasion.

As a guest, try to respect the couple’s wish of not inviting your kids for their wedding. Understand that their decision has nothing to do to with offending your kids or the whole family. Instead of deciding that the whole family will not attend the wedding just because your bundle of joy was not invited, try to put yourself on the bride and groom’s perspective.

We can’t expect children to behave on such an occasion as solemn as a wedding. Babies will cry during the event and young children would ask unending questions. Just think about how the couple will feel if they are reciting their vow then a kid suddenly pulled the bride’s veil. For some, they can control their kids but how about those who can’t?

Also, parents won’t enjoy the wedding festivities if they have a kid on their arms. Consider that you will enjoy the wedding more if you just leave your kids to someone while you go attend the event on your own.

And if ever you think that the bride and the groom should make an exemption because your little Nancy is as prim as a sheep. The thing is, you are not merely the guest who feels this way because for sure, another mother is asking the bride and the groom to make an exemption for their kid as well. If the couple will allow a single kid to attend the event, the other parents who will attend will feel as if they had been degraded.

So the rule is, don’t push your invite way. If the couple wishes not to have kids on the wedding, accept it.

Wedding Gown Maintenance

After the big event, what will you do with your gown?

No matter if you intend to keep your gown for your daughter in the future or have it merely because of sentimental reasons, it is important more than anything else to have it cleaned first. Of course, before you keep it, you should have it cleaned the soonest. As much as possible, do it within the first thirty days after the reception. It is a common knowledge that the longer the stains remain on the gown, the harder it is to be removed thus creating a big mess on the color and fabric. Stains like cake, grease, food, soil, champagne and grass must be discussed properly to the cleaner.

The beads should be secured on their proper place and in case something is damaged, it should be sewn first before cleaning. Using Stoddard solvents are usually used to clean the gown properly as it eliminates damage on the gown.

After the cleaning process, inspect the gown properly. Stains that were not removed must be inspected as well. In case additional cleaning is necessary, bear in mind that it may mean an additional risk on the garment hence be sure that you know the possible consequence to prevent regrets later.

Keep the gown in a box that is free from moist and dust. Put it in a cool and dry place like in the middle of a closet or beneath your bed. Prevent yourself from storing it within your attics since the temperature is so high. It is vital that air can still circulate inside the box to stop a consistent and stable environment where the gown can age in.

Nevertheless, make it a point to inspect the gown condition every 5 or 7 years. This will allow you to have quality control so you can catch any stains before they worsen. In case new stains are seen, it is possible to re-clean it. White cotton gloves must be used to handle the gown to prevent finger oil from coming in contact with the gown. Bear in mind that oil can oxidize hence it may leave ugly stains on the gown.

The Office Wedding: Forever on the Dance Floor

If you watched the Office on NBC last night, then you got to see a hilarious episode and (finally!) the wedding of Jim and Pam. I, like many of you, loved it. I loved that Jim cut his tie after Pam ripped her veil. I loved that they snuck off and got married on their own. I also love that they still came back to the planned ceremony and didn't care that the wedding party was pulling some pranks.

The dancing down the isle was taken from a couple who was married earlier this year. I overheard some people talking and they sad, "Wouldn't that just suck if you were the couple they were mocking on the Office?"

I disagree. Copying is the biggest form a flattery. Yes, they were doing it more for a huge laugh on the show, but obviously they wanted something to make the moment special on TV. I actually give props to the bride and groom who originally did it. What a great idea that made the ceremony special, and definitely not boring. We say take a cue from this offbeat couple. Celebrate your day in a way that is uniquely you!

Essential Niceties

Image your wedding in Arizona, under the brilliant sun and cooler temperatures of winter. Your side of the family lives in the upper Midwest, and your spouse’s family is under 50 miles away and some abroad. They use their vacation hours for time off at work, find someone to feed the dog, and have a sitter for the few days they are gone to watch the kids. They go to the store, and buy you what you asked for. They wrap it up, get all packed and jump on a plane or drive to see you get married.

Now imagine not thanking them for any of it. No thank you for spending their hard-earned money for your gift and their expenses. No thank you for taking the time out of their busy lives to come see you. No thank you at all.

Sadly, some people don’t send out thank you cards. Don’t be the relative that is ungrateful. No one wants to give something to someone who doesn’t appreciate it. Show how much you loved and appreciated everyone and everything by getting them out sooner.

Don’t dare send a mass mailing – insulting, plain, pre-printed thank you. Always say thank you with a personalized, hand-written thanks, expressing how the gift will be well used and that you will think of them in your home always.

Engagement Story: Samantha & Christopher

How they met...
Samantha's mother began working at the same company Chris was in 2007. He became very close with her mother and she would tell him all the time what a wonderful daughter she had. The first time Chris met her, he knew that they would be together. After a couple of happy hours with co-workers and some time together, they decided to go out on our first date.

How he proposed...
After that night, Chris knew that it was perfect. When he decided to propose, he wanted to do something that hadn't been done before. He put together a photo album, composed in order, of all of the things they had done up to that point. Along with photos, he also laid out a story line to go with it. The last photo in the album was one of Chris holding the ring box and a caption saying "....and he asked her a question....." After and akward silence and a look of surprise from her, he asked Samantha to marry him! She of course said yes and they celebrated with some champagne and a lot of phone calls.

Samantha and Christopher are having a black, white and red wedding in November of next year. We have already done their Save the Date Magnets and will post them soon.

AZ Bridal Week is Almost Here!

Let Guests Doodle on the Wedding Guestbook

I was recently asked by a bride if I had any ideas about a wedding guestbook that was fun and different. I instantly thought of what we did at our wedding - a photo guestbook.

We decorated a table with a poster explaining the process and also had the DJ announce it.

1-Have another Guest take your photo. (We used Polaroids to make it easy to print.)

2-Use double sided tape to apply photo to page. (Acid free of course. These are your memories!)

3-Have fun answering "predictions" and drawing photos on the guestbook page.

It was a big hit. Our guests took lots of goofy photos and had some funny words of wisdom to share with us. The best part was we now have a keepsake we actually look through once in a while (that's not just boring signatures), and we now have a photo of everyone who attended our wedding.
